@Alex
The IXO is for me more than just a product innovation. It is a classical disruptive value innovation. The IXO addresses an untapped market with features the traditional market did not value and leaves away features that the traditional market found essential.
The IXO competes with non-consumption. At the same time, Bosch build up different sales channels that the power tool industry did not use before. Interestingly, the product is a low-end disruption since it serves overserved customers but at the same time it is a premium product. For more on the Bosch IXO case go to the slides I have published.
On one point I agree with you, Alex, there is no clear cut distinction between product and value innovation. There are a lot of grey shades in between.

Great example of how diversity can bring up great ideas.

Short question: It is not quite clear to me why this case presents a business model innovation. To me it seems like a beautiful illustration of a product innovation targeting a different market segment. I don't want to be nitpicking. Just curious.

I am totally convinced that diversity increases the potential of good solutions. Our personalities and our way of thinking are influenced by our backgroup - cultural or education and also gender. If you will put people from different backgrounds in one team you will get a higher quantity of possible solutions.
However, for the fact that my group did not follow the MOTS I have an other explantion: fulfilling expectations. The first person in our group who came up with a MOTS solution was immediately interrupted by the others telling: "We are in a business model innovation class. This can't be expected from us."
That we finally came up with a product for women - this was actually an idea of a women...

Don't blame yourself, Dr. Jones. Although I own this wonderful tool of BOSCH by myself, my brain refused to think out of bounds and I was not able to draw the right conclusions, too. Although our brain tends to keep to the beaten track, I guess with some hours of exercise we will do well. It's all about overcoming limitations we aren't used to trespass in our daily routine. Or in two words: fresh thinking.

How can one prepare for a course titled business model innovation, read appropriate literature regarding the importance of customer value (reinventing your business model)beforehand, yet consequently fail to think about innovation when solving the team exercise(I was in the MOTS Team)? I did so - thanks for the eye-opener. That will never happen again !
